Aspen Historical Society operates the largest public archive in the region. This includes a photographic collection featuring over 40,000 images, 10,500 archival records, 1,100 books in our specialty library, and over 7,500 artifacts. Research assistance is available by appointment, and the public can access and search a large portion of the Collection online at www.archiveaspen.org, including images that can be ordered as prints and are also available on a fee-basis for commercial or editorial use.

On display in the Archive Building’s Community Gallery* this summer are a selection of photographs from the Durrance Collection. Donated by Dick Jr. and Dave Durrance (sons of Margaret “Miggs” and Dick Sr.) and accessioned with support from the Fred & Elli Iselin Foundation, the collection of over 600 images captures Aspen and Aspenites beginning in the 1940s. Margaret Durrance was a professional photographer who worked with her husband while he pursued film projects; her work appeared in national magazines such as LIFE, Look, Sports Illustrated and National Geographic. The collection features color as well as black and white images and focuses on skiing and ski races as well as Aspen’s culture of music and intellectual pursuits. The Durrances’ long history in the area and their immense contributions to the development of Aspen and Snowmass are reflected in the 90 + images on display.
*The Community Gallery is open during Archive Office hours, however it is best to call ahead to confirm access in case there are meetings or gatherings in the room that prohibit viewing of the display.
