Aspen Historical Society operates one of the largest public archives in the region. This includes a photographic collection featuring over 40,000 images, 10,500 archival records, 1,100 books in our specialty library, and over 7,500 artifacts. Research assistance is available by appointment, and the public can access and search a large portion of the Collection online at www.archiveaspen.org, including 20,000 images that can be ordered as prints and are also available on a fee-basis for commercial or editorial use.
On display in the Archive Building’s Community Gallery this winter are select photographs by Robert Chamberlain. Bob, a professional photographer and artist, donated his collection of Aspen photography to the AHS Collection in 2017. Bob has documented life in the area since the 1960s, from hippie culture to modern-day ski racing, he artfully captured the pulse of the community for decades. Curated images will tell the story of a community of young ski bums evolving slowly and sometimes gracefully into Aspen old-timers. An Aspen resident since 1958, Bob’s first published work graced the cover of SKI Magazine Annual in 1962 and he was a frequent contributor to many local and regional publications.
