At Aspen Historical Society we want to make all visitors feel welcome. Below is some information about access to AHS sites and programs; we strive to be accessible for all visitors and will do everything we can to accommodate visitor needs.
If you have specific questions or for more information about access to individual sites or programs, please email info@aspenhistory.org or call 970.925.3721
Wheeler/Stallard Museum:
Parking is available on the adjacent streets; limited ADA parking spaces are available in the lot off Hallam St.
The Wheeler/Stallard Museum is equipped with a wheelchair lift on the back (Hallam St.) side of the building. This enables access to the first floor of the museum.*
Holden/Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum
Limited parking is available adjacent to the Zupancis cabin in the marked spots. ADA parking is available in the southeast corner of the property, behind the museum. Follow the signs off Aspen 82 to access this area (please use caution when crossing the bike path).
The Holden/Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum can be accessed via the ramp on the east side of the building. This enables access to the first floor of the museum.*
*Given the historic nature of the museum buildings, the second floors of both museums are not wheelchair accessible, however AHS can provide interpretive materials that summarize the exhibitions in the second-floor spaces.
Ashcroft Ghost Town
Parking is available in the lot by the welcome cabin.
There is a rudimentary path/boardwalk through the main thoroughfare of Ashcroft Ghost Town that is wheelchair accessible, but uneven; rocky terrain is present.
Independence Ghost Town
Parking is available along the road at the upper lot at the entrance to the ghost town, and at the lower access by the Farwell Mill.
Wheelchair access is not recommended through this site due to the mountainous landscape.
Accessible Restrooms
The restrooms at both museums and Ashcroft Ghost Town are accessible. There are no restrooms at Independence Ghost Town.
Service Animals
Licensed service animals—animals that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability—are allowed throughout the museums and ghost towns but must be leashed. Pets and emotional support animals are not considered service animals and are not permitted.
First Aid
Should you require simple, non-emergency first aid during your visit, docents are equipped with basic first aid kits. If the matter is an emergency, please call 911.
PLEASE NOTE: there is no cellular service or wifi at either Ashcroft or Independence ghost towns. If docents are present on-site, they are equipped with in-reach devices that can transmit brief emergency messages. Visitors should bring any necessary medications and should come prepared for remote conditions with varying weather.
Accessibility on Guided Tours
The AHS walking tours, the Wheeler Opera House Tour, and the Hotel Jerome Tour are wheelchair accessible. Terrain varies dependent on location (uneven ground and curbs are present for the outdoor tours) but, in general, each route can be navigated by a wheelchair with the assistance of a care person (welcome to participate at no cost).
The History Coach Electric Vehicle Tour is a nice option for any patron wishing to decrease walking requirements. Please inquire for more information.
